UT-Austin Faculty Can Ban Guns In Offices
(Austin, TX) — The University of Texas at Austin is giving its faculty and staff the option of banning weapons from their personal offices when the new Campus Carry Law goes into effect August 1st. The UT regents passed the exception yesterday, but, at the same time, allowed licensed gun carriers on campus to keep a bullet in the chamber of their guns if they so desired. UT-Austin President Greg Fenves has argued that keeping a round in the chamber will lead to accidental shootings.
Senator Wants UT’s Purchase Of Land in Houston Investigated
(Houston, TX) — It’s no secret that the University of Houston is upset over the recent purchase of property in Houston by the UT System and now a state senator is getting involved. Democrat John Whitmire wants the state auditor to investigate the purchase to “ensure complete transparency and accountability of our higher education dollars.” UT says it plans to build an “intellectual hub” in Houston, but UH calls the move an “invasion” and unnecessary.
Texas AG Fires Back At UT Professors Suing Over CC
(Austin, TX) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is firing back at UT-Austin professors suing to block the Campus Carry Law from going into effect August 1st. Paxton calls the lawsuit “baseless” and plans to defend the law vigorously in court. The three professors say armed students in the classroom would stifle discussions on emotional issues like abortion and that’s a violation of the First Amendment.
