(Washington DC) — Texas senator John Cornyn says it’s time to make killing a local police officer a federal matter. The Republican lawmaker yesterday introduced his “Back the Blue” Act on the Senate floor. It would make killing or assaulting a law officer a federal crime subject to the death penalty and a mandatory minimum 30-year prison sentence. The legislation was sparked by last week’s Dallas sniper attack that killed five police officers.
