Three weeks before Micah Xavier Johnson opened fire on Dallas police Thursday night, he offered to work security for protesters outside a Donald Trump appearance in Dallas. KERA’s Bill Zeeble reports that organizers said “no way” – because Johnson wanted to bring a gun.

Emotions were already high as hundreds of protesters marched through downtown Dallas last night, rallying against police shootings in Minnesota and across the country. Then gunshots erupted. Police officers were hit. Many died. A mayor choked back tears. It was an unprecedented night in Dallas history — and, perhaps, American history.

KERA intern Javier Giribet was at the scene of the march through downtown Dallas, talking with demonstrators, when the shootings happened. He recorded his thoughts afterward and sent them along.
Around 7 pm Thursday night (July 7), nearly 1,000 people showed up to Belo Garden Park in downtown Dallas. They were part of a protest organized by Black Lives Matters Dallas, to protest the recent fatal police shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota. The people that showed up rallied and then marched heading down on Commerce Street.
