Zach’s In The Mix, Vol. 45 (3/20/23)

It is a genuine shame I didn’t post an In The Mix last week, but fresh off my arrival back in Lubbock after being in Austin for a week during SXSW, here is Zach’s In The Mix, Volume 45.

Featured Pick: Dijon – coogie

We played this on Gettin’ By the week prior to spring break, and I enjoyed the song, but I don’t think it genuinely clicked with me until my 5th listen. The vocals are a little off-putting at first, but the song has a lot of passion, and Dijon absolutely crushes it here. I am excited for a hopefully new project from him.

Other Vibes

Genesis Owusu – Good Times

Seeing Genesis Owusu live at SXSW was awesome, and I sang nearly every word in the front row during his show except to this song which has went over my radar for years. This song is uplifting, fun, and I wish I knew it existed because it makes me happy listening to it.

half•alive – Beige

I wasn’t a major fan of half•alive’s last project after falling in love with their debut, but Beige released under the new NME x Bose C23 compilation is an excellent track and an excellent closer to the entire compilation. This is one of those tracks that reminds you why you fell in love with a group in the first place.

Yves Tumor – Ebony Eye

I went into Yves Tumor’s new album with a hating mindset. Heaven for a Tortured Mind is one of the best albums of 2020, and I was not going to let whatever new project Yves Tumor dropped distract from that. However, though nothing is as amazing as Gospel for a New Century and Kerosene!, Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) is genuinely a better album as a whole. The closing track Ebony Eye’s instrumentation reminds me a lot of Gospel for a New Century, and I think it is part of the reason why it’s my favorite track from the whole album. It rocks.

M83 – Fantasy

I was excited for a new M83 album especially with Ocean Niagara and Fantasy: Chapter 1 being quite. I turned the album on as the sun was setting on the drive back to Lubbock. The album overall is worth a listen, but the title track is definitely the best track out of the new batch. M83 is back, baby!

Nia Archives – Bianá

The Jungle and Drum and Bass revival that has happened these past couple of years deserves to be researched. Nia Archives is probably one of the best producers of the revival scene at the moment. Her fusion of R&B and Jungle is awesome. Bianá is not one of those fusion tracks. Bianá comprises of a Brazilian sample and a crazy drum pattern that makes it extremely addictive to listen to especially on a highway. Shoutout to Hierba over a KVRX that I met at SXSW who shared the same love of this track with me moments after connecting for the first time. Music connects us all together.

PawPaw Rod – HIT EM WHERE IT HURTS

I left Lubbock late trying to get back to Tyler before I drove down to Austin. I was stuck in crazy traffic over I-20. I kept running this track back over and over as I moved at a 10 MPH pace. PawPaw Rod is so awesome.
