Zach’s In The Mix, Vol. 44 (3/6/23)

Another week another dollar. We are looking for the vibes and vibrations. Here is Zach’s In The Mix, Volume 44.

Featured Pick: The entire discography of De La Soul

As streaming services started their rises into the main source of music consumption December 24th, 2015 was a historic day for streaming platforms when the Beatles nine studio albums and the rest of their discography hit streaming services for the first time. For fans of hip-hop, last Friday (3/3/23) was their equivalent. Since De La’s music heavily utilized samples, Tommy Boy Records thought the music wasn’t worth being cleared. After years of fan protest and label struggles, the trio’s music is finally available to be streamed on all platforms. It is a day that fans thought would never happen, but it is a relief to be able to consume some of the greatest albums in hip-hop history. I hope to write a larger article diving into the group’s albums, but for now, check out their discography (their first four albums to be exact. RIP TRUGOY.

Other Vibes

Sports Team – Georgie

In my continuous planning for SXSW, I was doing a discography dive of Sport Team’s 2 Albums and 3 EPs. Georgie is catchy and exciting indie rock music. I haven’t heard their stuff in a minute. Landy said if I don’t go see them during my SXSW tenture he will be disappointed.

Jordan Ward – FAMJAM4000

Jordan Ward is a In The Mix alumni with his song IDC with Joony. With his new album, it is a dense collection of groovy tunes that I’ll keep on the back burner for the summertime. Shoutout key changes, and fun songs that everyone can enjoy.

Masego – Black Anime

This song samples DJ Casper’s Cha Cha Slide. What? Masego’s self-titled album came out last Friday, and this opener is super sensual and smooth. Sampling Cha Cha Slide was a weird choice, but in the context of the song, it works. Using the original song’s 808s as a back beat was a slick production choice. Shoutout Louie Lastic.

Slowthai – Yum

Slowthai’s music has always had roots of punk and aggression, and him tapping mega-producer Dan Carey to run his entire album into the genre of Post-Punk. Yum is a crazy opener. The build into the first verse with the story about his therapist really climbs the steps of aggression, and it was super unique even for Slowthai’s grungiest tracks. This and Tourniquet are the definite highlights of the album.

Key Glock – Dirt

I hate to keep listing openers, but as an art form openers are the hook to an album minus the singles. Dirt by Key Glock is built around a sample I have never heard with classic Key Glock bars. Himmy Neutron. Him Duncan.

Caroline Polachek – Bunny Is a Rider

I love this song. Landry loves this song. It came back on my radar when Caroline Polachek’s Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, but it took me until this weekend driving in the car when I truly remember how great the song is. I love how Caroline Polachek and the rest of the Art Pop scene is making unique but catchy music. I wish I could whistle man.
