The Lady Raiders snapped a three-game skid by defeating Kansas State 78-68 for its fourth Big 12 win of the season. It was the first time Tech swept the Wildcats since the 2012-2013 season.
Four Lady Raiders finished in double figures. Guards Bryn Gerlich, Jasmine Shavers, Bre’Amber Scott and Bailey Maupin all scored at least 15 points in what was a fantastic display of offense.
Here’s how it went down on Sunday, quarter by quarter.
First Quarter
Bryn Gerlich did most of the heavy lifting in the first quarter. Gerlich- coming off a career-high 25-point game against OSU- hit two threes in a row to give the Lady Raiders an early lead.
Later in the quarter, Bailey Maupin hit another Tech three to help the Lady Raiders to a 18-13 lead after the first quarter.
Second Quarter
The Lady Raiders continued their hot streak from beyond the arc in the second quarter. Gerlich converted her third three of the game, and guard Rhyle McKinney hit a corner three to help Tech to a 24-17 lead.
Later in the quarter, freshman Jasmine Shavers converted a three-point play to give Tech a 27-17 advantage.
A few baskets from Kansas State’s Gabby Gregory and Jaelyn Glenn cut Tech’s lead to single digits near the end of the quarter, but a buzzer-beating three from Maupin allowed the Lady Raiders to reclaim a 10-point lead at halftime.
Third Quarter
Tech’s offense was firing on all cylinders heading into the third quarter. A few minutes into the period, Bre’Amber Scott hit a three, Shavers scored in the paint and Gerlich hit her fourth three. The 8-0 run gave the Lady Raiders a 48-34 lead midway through the third.
The Wildcats refused to go away. A few Tech turnovers helped Kansas State go on a 10-0 run that cut Tech’s lead to three. Baskets from Maupin and Scott ended the Wildcat run, and gave Tech a five-point lead.
Wildcat guard Serena Sundell helped keep the Wildcats in the game by hitting several third quarter free throws, but more timely points from Maupin and Scott kept the Lady Raiders in the lead. Tech ended the quarter up 58-49.
Fourth Quarter
Bryn Gerlich immediately re-established a double-digit Tech lead by hitting her fifth three on the opening possession of the fourth quarter.
After a Gregory three brought the Wildcats within five, Maupin converted a layup and Scott converted a three-point play to give Tech a 66-56 lead.
In the final minutes, Scott scored seven straight points for Tech to help put the game away. The Lady Raiders would cruise the rest of the way to a 78-68 win.
Comments from the Lady Raiders
Lady Raider head coach Krista Gerlich said she was proud of her team for coming away with a double-digit win despite some key mistakes.
“It wasn’t a perfect game by any means, still we had too many turnovers, obviously we weren’t great from the free throw line,” Gerlich said. “For us to still secure a double-digit win is fantastic especially on our home court so I’m really proud of them.”
The Lady Raiders only shot 13-23 from the free throw line, but made up for it by going 11-26 from beyond the arc. Bryn Gerlich led the way with five made threes.
Gerlich finished with 16 points while shooting five-for-eight from three. Gerlich credited her teammates for finding her open.
“I don’t feel like I’m forcing anything right now, I feel like my teammates are doing a really good job of finding me when I’m open, I feel like I haven’t taken a contested shot in a while which is really nice,” Gerlich said. “I just think we’re working our offense so well right now that the ball is just moving where it needs to be right now.”
