Zach’s In The Mix, Vol. 43 (2/27/23)

If you have been following me on Instagram (@zacharysorrels), you might have seen that every Monday I post a collection of my current favorite songs of the week on my story. I initially had planned to turn that into content over here, but I never did! Shameful… However, for week 43, I have turned over a clean slate, and I present to you Zach’s In The Mix, Volume 43.

Featured Pick: Sideshow – 2MM (feat. Valee)

Most of my enjoyment of Sideshow comes from his features on The Alchemist’s TV Dinners and MIKE’s Alarmed! Though I have heard and enjoyed his solo work, I just never given him the attention he deserved. Don’t Just Stand There! out of MIKE’s 10K label has a lot of great highlight from a song produced by Popstar Benny and the cut 2MM that features Valee. To me, Valee has always been one of those IYKYK type of artists and the attention he had from when he signed to G.O.O.D. has kinda dwindled. However, he has been putting out his best work these past few years. Combined Sideshow gives a great verse while Valee staying on the hook. Between a smooth AYOCHILLMANNN beat and the twos collective charisma, the song is worth a spin.

Other Vibes

The Radio Dept. – Heaven’s On Fire

Landry played this on our show Gettin’ By (which airs Tuesdays from 6-7 PM) last week, and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. The song is just a classic early 2010s indie rock tune with some dream pop elements.

HOL! – Country Riddim

Andrew Watters and I have decided to let this song become the new rick roll of the decade. We discovered this song from a Skrillex, Fred again.., and Four Tet DJ set played in the middle of Time Square in a bus while it was pouring down rain. In the midst of a normal set, Four Tet decided to see how many times he could get away with playing this song, and now it has ruined my life. You can listen to the actual song here, but here’s the DJ Set in question:

Parquet Courts – Dust

Dust is everywhere, sweep

Parquet Courts, when discussing Lubbock this past week.

Don Toliver – Bus Stop (feat. Brent Faiyaz)

Sometimes you listen to an album and enjoy it, but when a standout moment occurs, you sit up just a little bit more and pause everything to take in the song just for a moment. That is the case with Bus Stop on Don Toliver’s new album Love Sick. Sampling Blackstreet’s I Can’t Get You (Out of My Mind), Bus Stop is a Jersey Club-inspired track with Don Toliver and Brent Faiyaz crooning over the Hit-Boy and Dpat produced track. The rest of the album is fine, but this track stands out as the best piece Don Toliver has put out in a moment.

Gilla Band – Backwash

When I talk to people about music, I am always curious on what some of their favorite artists or albums are at the current moment in time. I’ve heard the name Gilla Band just from being in music circles, but I never checked them out until someone told me it was their favorite album of last year. I’ve heard plenty of noise rock, but their album Most Normal takes the cake at being the noisiest of them all. This past week, their track Backwash came back into rotation for me, and it really highlights why the band is so interesting, their constant build-up and releases track after track. For those who’s ears have never ranged before, this is what tinnitus feels like.
