Women’s Basketball Recap – Euphoria at the Erwin Center: Texas Tech Defeats No. 9 Texas in Austin

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders had lost eight in a row to the Texas Longhorns at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas, coming into Wednesday night.

As this is the last year for the Longhorns at the Erwin Center, the Lady Raiders got the last laugh as they came out with guns blazing and never let up as they defeated the No. 9 Longhorns 74-61 Wednesday night.

The Longhorns still forced turnovers like they normally do (26), but otherwise, the Lady Raiders rolled over them, forcing the Longhorns to shoot just 29.2%.

Lady Raiders’ star super senior Vivian Gray tied her season high with 23 points and added seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks, while junior Bre’Amber Scott put up 21 points in just her second start back from injury.

Super senior Taylah Thomas had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in another fantastic game three days after setting a career-high in points, and freshman Hadi Faye rebounded from a rough game Sunday with 11 rebounds of her own.

Thomas was the big spark early, scoring seven of Tech’s first 12 points as they ended the first quarter up 18-11. Texas started to inch back, but the Lady Raiders were up at halftime 34-30.

At the start of the second half, officials said Texas Tech did not properly turn in their starters, and it ended in shouting, even between Texas Tech head coach Krista Gerlich and Texas head coach Vic Schaefer. Both coaches were called for technical fouls.

Austin American-Statesman reporter Danny Davis reported what happened in the incident, from both Schaefer’s and Gerlich’s perspective.

Texas Tech seemed to take advantage of the tension, outscoring the Lady Raiders 22-11 in the third quarter and riding that advantage all the way to the end, snapping a three-game losing streak.

The Lady Raiders are now 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in Big 12 play, while the Longhorns drop just their second game of the season and are now 10-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play.

Texas Tech’s next game is back home at the United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Oklahoma State. Everyone who has a ticket to the Tech men’s basketball game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Kansas will get a free ticket to the Lady Raider game, and the first 1,000 fans will receive a free Vivian Gray T-shirt, per a Tech email ad.
