The Texas Tech Men’s basketball team earned its fourth Big 12 win of the season after defeating No. 15 Iowa State 72-60.
While a short-handed Tech team lost to the Cyclones earlier in the year, a fully loaded Red Raider team was able to dismantle Iowa State thanks to a second half explosion that saw the Red Raiders lead by as much as 23.
Tech improved to 14-4 and 4-2 in the Big 12 while Iowa State fell to 14-4 and 2-4 in the Big 12.
First Half
The game started with each team trading baskets. Iowa State Senior guard Izaiah Brockington scored the first two points of the match. Tech Super Senior guard Davion Warren answered back with a quick triple to get the scoring going for Tech.
Midway through the first half, Super Senior guard Adonis Arms drilled a corner three that put the Red Raiders up 10-8.
Arms made another spectacular play when he drove down the lane and threw down a monstrous dunk over Iowa State forward George Conditt.
Tech held a three point lead with six minutes to go in the half, but Iowa State guard Caleb Grill hit a three to tie the game at 18.
With just over a minute before halftime, Tech forward Bryson Williams went behind the back and finished a nice floater to give the Red Raiders a 24-23 lead.
With just 17 seconds left in the half, Junior guard Terrence Shannon Jr. drove down the lane and scored to give Tech a 26-23 halftime lead.
Second Half
The second half began like the first. Both teams traded blows but neither side could gain a significant advantage.
After a free throw from Tech guard Kevin McCullar put Tech up by four, Iowa State guard Gabe Kalscheur hit a three to make it a 29-28 game.
With over 15 minutes remaining in the game, Tech finally began to widen its lead. Tech forward Kevin Obanor scored on a put-back to give the Red Raiders a 33-28 lead.
Later in the half, Obanor completed a three point play on another put-back layup to put Tech up 40-30.
Midway through the half, Williams drilled a three that gave the Red Raiders a 12 point lead.
Later in the half, Shannon caught a lob from McCullar and threw down a nasty alley-oop dunk to give Tech a commanding 60-40 lead over the Cyclones.
With Tech up 66-44 with under five minutes remaining, the rest of the game was mere formality. The Red Raiders drained the clock with each possession and claimed victory.
