The Texas Tech women’s basketball team will tip-off the 2021-22 season on Thursday against Southeastern Louisiana.
Former Tech player Krista Gerlich will begin her second season as head coach of the Lady Raiders. In her first season as head coach, Gerlich led the Lady Raiders to a 10-15 record. Despite being below .500, Tech pulled off some impressive victories over Texas and Kansas.
The Lady Raiders will look to build on some of the success from last season and put together a more consistent campaign.
A New Team
The Lady Raiders have a plethora of new players this season including Arkansas transfer Taylah Thomas. Thomas said the team is still working on getting better chemistry but the relationships built off the court have helped tremendously.
“I think we’ve built great relationships outside of the court.” Thomas said. “That helps a lot when you actually care to know what your teammate likes and what they don’t like so I think that’s helped a lot.”
Junior forward and coach’s daughter Bryn Gerlich said getting to know the new players has been really fun.
“It has been so much fun getting to just basically create a new team.” Gerlich said. “It’s actually crazy how well we all get along and how much we care for one another.”
Preparing for the First Game
Head coach Krista Gerlich said this first game will offer a few challenges for the Lady Raiders.
“This is a great test for us, but we definitely are going to have to play with some composure and play with some urgency on every pass and every movement.” Gerlich said. “We just can’t give up easy buckets in transition because of silly turnovers.”
Senior guard Breonca Ducksworth averaged 8.4 points per game last season for the Lions. The Lady Raiders will look to slow her down start the season with a win at home.
