Joey McGuire Announced as Texas Tech Football’s New Head Coach

Joey McGuire will be the new football head coach at Texas Tech after the 2021 season, Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt announced Monday.

He will be formally introduced in a press conference at the club level of the West Stadium Building to Jones AT&T Stadium at 12 p.m. Tuesday.

He was an assistant at Baylor the last five seasons, including associate head coach the last three.

Before that, he was the head coach at Cedar Hill for 14 seasons, leading them to 12 consecutive playoff appearances and three state championships in 2006, 2013 and 2014.

He will immediately join the athletic department and start being the head coach after the 2021 season.

The story was first reported by Carlos Silva Jr. and Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Sunday night.

Sonny Cumbie will continue to be Tech’s interim head coach through the remainder of the season.

McGuire will replace Matt Wells, who was fired Sept. 25 with a 13-17 record in a little over two and a half years leading the Red Raiders.
