Texas Tech Men’s Basketball Transfers Talk About 2021-22 Season

by Will Lanigan

Two Texas Tech men’s basketball transfers, part of the nine newcomers to the team, talked to the media Thursday in Lubbock about the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Transfers Look to the Veterans

Senior guard Davion Warren, a transfer from Hampton, spoke of junior guard Terrence Shannon Jr. as a great leader.

“I look up to him,” Warren said, “and he believes in me.”

Warren said his goal is to stay true to himself and listen to coaches and his fellow players to continue to improve his play.

He said he sees himself as a great defender and hopes he will be able to show everyone that he can indeed play great defense.

Fellow senior guard Sardaar Calhoun, a transfer from Florida State, said he was impressed with the leadership of junior guard Kevin McCullar.

“Kevin is the X-factor,” Calhoun said. “In drills, whether it’s two on two or three on three, he always finds a way for his team to win.”

He emphasized that all the returning players are laying the foundation for the team to win big.

New Head Coach

Warren spoke very highly of new Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams.

“Sometimes, you need a hard hat in practice!” Warren said as he laughed. “Coach Adams pushes us all to be better, but he loves all of us.”

Calhoun also said good things about the new Tech head coach.

“Coach Adams wants to move the program in the right direction,” Calhoun said, “and everyone is buying into his mindset in this program.”

Winning Focus

In the Big 12 preseason poll released Thursday, Texas Tech was picked to finish fourth in the conference.

Warren said the goal is not to be No. 4 in the Big 12, but No. 1.

Calhoun said he is not looking too far ahead and is focused on the very first game.

“I’m not jumping ahead to anyone on the schedule,” Calhoun said. “Every game does matter, and I think you don’t have to lose a game.”
