The Texas Tech soccer team (10-4-2, 3-3-1 Big 12) lost to No. 21 West Virginia (9-4-2, 3-2-1 Big 12) 2-0.
In another hard-fought road game, the Red Raiders and Mountaineers stayed scoreless until two late goals from West Virginia handed Tech its third Big 12 loss of the season.
Madison White Keeps it Close
Texas Tech junior goalkeeper Madison White recorded four saves in the first half.
In the sixth minute, Mountaineer freshman forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran attempted a header mere feet from the goal. White deflected the shot and gathered it on the ground to keep the game scoreless early.
With just over seven minutes to play in the first half, White again made a miraculous save.
West Virginia sophomore midfielder Lily McCarthy took a shot towards the center goal. White made the save on a diving attempt. The teams went to the halftime locker room tied at 0-0.
West Virginia Scores Late
In the 71st minute, West Virginia would deliver the game’s first score. Mountaineer senior midfielder Isabella Sibley struck the ball into the top of the goal just outside the reach of Madison White.
The Red Raiders had an opportunity to tie the game in the 81st minute. Sophomore forward Gisselle Kozarski shot for the top-left of the goal, but the ball sailed out of bounds.
With only 51 seconds remaining, West Virginia added another goal to make the score 2-0. Isabella Sibley scored from just inside the penalty area on a shot into the center of the goal.
Main Takeaways
The Mountaineers out shot the Red Raiders 14-8 in the game. Madison White and the Tech defense kept it close until the final 20 minutes when West Virginia started to convert on its opportunities.
Of the Red Raiders eight shots, only three of them were on goal. All three resulted in saves by Mountaineer goalkeeper Kayza Massey.
Stone’s Reaction
Tech head coach Tom Stone said it’s a difficult loss to take, but the team will move forward.
“They had the better second half, we had the better first half, but they got their goals in the second half and our chances kind of went missing.” Stone said. “It’s a hard one to take because we thought we had enough to win today, but we’ll go back to Lubbock and get ready for Kansas and TCU.
