The Texas Tech soccer team (11-5-2, 4-4-1 Big 12) will square off against Oklahoma State (9-6-2, 4-3-1 Big 12) for the first round of the Big 12 tournament. The game will take place at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex this Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Red Raiders enter the tournament as the fifth seed while the Cowgirls enter as the fourth seed. The teams played each other to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 7 during the regular season.
A Strong Regular Season
The Red Raiders finished the regular season with a winning record for the 10th time under head coach Tom Stone. After finishing 2-5-2 in a shortened and injury-plagued 2020 season, Tech finished 11-5-2 while putting on some impressive performances.
Super senior forward Kirsten Davis paced the team with 14 goals on the season. Tech’s star player accounted for 34 total points on the year. Junior goalkeeper Madison White posted 46 saves to go along with seven shutouts.
During the season a few freshmen made a name for themselves. Freshman forward Ashleigh Williams was second on the team with eight goals on the year, and freshman defender Macy Blackburn led the team with nine assists.
A Rematch With the Cowgirls
During the regular season, the Red Raiders and Cowgirls played in a lucrative double overtime game that ended in a 1-1 tie. The teams were evenly matched throughout the game as both posted 10 shots before overtime.
The Cowgirls have had multiple impact players. 10 different players have scored for the Cowgirls this season. Junior forward Olyvia Dowell and senior midfielder Grace Yochum tied for the team lead in goals with six each. Freshman goalkeeper Evie Vitali finished the year with 61 saves.
Oklahoma State will enter the tournament with a bit of momentum. The team is coming off of a 2-1 overtime win on the road over West Virginia. On the other hand, Tech is coming off of a 1-0 home loss to the No. 1 seeded TCU Horned Frogs. The Red Raiders will look to seize the Cowgirls momentum and come away with a first round victory.
Main Takeaways
Tech and Oklahoma State both played admirably during the regular season. If the regular season matchup between these two teams is any indication, the first round matchup should be another evenly-matched and hard-fought game.
