RECAP: Texas Tech Soccer Defeats Iowa State 2-1

The Texas Tech soccer team earned its 10th overall win and third Big 12 victory of the season after defeating Iowa State 2-1 on the road.

In a hard-fought 90 minutes of soccer, the Red Raiders scored two unanswered goals in the second half to complete a comeback victory over the Cyclones.

Scoreless First Half

The first half of the game was a scoreless endeavor that saw both teams take six shots.

The first shot of the half came in the eighth minute when Red Raider super senior forward Kirsten Davis struck the ball toward center goal. Iowa State goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz was there for the save, the first of nine on the night.

The Cyclone’s first shot of the night came in the twelfth minute. Freshman midfielder Lauren McConnell shot for the bottom left of the goal, but Tech goalkeeper Madison White easily scooped it up for one of just two saves on the night.

Both teams continued to come up empty on shots, and the first half ended with the teams tied at zero.

Second Half Scoring

In the second half, the Red Raiders took eight shots while the Cyclones took six.

Just three minutes into the second half, Iowa State scored the first goal of the game. Redshirt junior forward Kenady Adams shot the ball off of the crossbar, but Cyclone midfielder Mira Emma was there to head the ricochet into the goal.

In the 73rd minute, Kirsten Davis hit a shot into the top-right corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

The game was still even with just five minutes to play. Jordan Silkowitz batted the ball away for her ninth save of the night, but Tech sophomore forward Gisselle Kozarski was there to score the game-winning header off the bounce.

Stone’s Reaction

Tech head coach Tom Stone said adjustments made by associate head coach Gibbs Keeton and assistant coach Nick Hallam were key in the victory.

“Gibbs and Nick had changed our formation, they did a great job making an adjustment for us,” Stone said. “They moved us into a different shape that allowed us to press better and keep Iowa State locked in, and I really got to give those guys credit.”

He said he was glad to see how the team responded in the second half, and it was wonderful to see what the team can do with their backs against the wall.
