Texas Tech football got throttled by the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners 52-21 Saturday in Norman, Oklahoma, in Sonny Cumbie’s first game as interim head coach of the Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders drop to 5-4 on the season with three ranked opponents still left on the schedule.
Oklahoma keeps their undefeated season and College Football Playoff hopes alive as they improve to 9-0.
First Half: Colombi Hurt as Oklahoma Goes up 21
Down 7-0, junior wide receiver Erik Ezukanma caught a 17-yard touchdown over two Oklahoma defenders to get Tech on the board and tie the game with 2:31 left in the first quarter.
Oklahoma dominated from that point forward, starting with a 67-yard touchdown pass from true freshman quarterback Caleb Williams to sophomore wide receiver Marvin Mims just four plays later.
In the middle of the second quarter, Tech senior quarterback Henry Colombi was hit on a run out of bounds and did not come back into the game. He was replaced by redshirt freshman quarterback Donovan Smith, who until then had mostly been used on running plays to change up the offense.
Second Half: Oklahoma Coasts to Victory
Smith showed promise as he led Tech on two scoring drives in the second half, one of them ending with a beautiful 17-yard touchdown pass as he rolled to his left to redshirt freshman wide receiver J.J. Sparkman.
However, Oklahoma coasted to victory as Caleb Williams threw for six touchdowns in the game, a record for a true freshman quarterback at Oklahoma.
Even Oklahoma sophomore quarterback Spencer Rattler got in on the action, completing all five of his passes in garbage time, including a 42-yard touchdown to sophomore Brian Darby.
