The Texas Tech soccer team, thanks in no small part to freshman forward Ashleigh Williams, defeated the Eagles of Eastern Washington University 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
Williams scored all three goals for the Red Raiders. She became the fifth player in program history to record a hat trick and the first since Janine Beckie’s effort against the Prairie View A&M Panthers in 2014.
EWU Outshot in the First Half But Keeps It Tied
In the first half, Tech had 14 shots and the Eagles didn’t have a single shot. The ball spent most of its time on the Eastern Washington end of the field, with the Eagles almost never playing offense.
EWU senior goalkeeper Kelsee Winston was forced to record six saves in the half, including three saves of junior forward Macy Schultz and two saves of super senior forward Kirsten Davis.
Tech Second Half Breakthrough
After halftime, the Red Raider offense was finally able to break through and overcome Winston’s defensive effort, as Williams scored one minute and five seconds into the second period for her first of three scores.
Winston only had three saves as three shots, all from Tech’s Ashleigh Williams, made it past her for goals. The Red Raiders outshot EWU in the second half 10-1, with a save from Tech junior goalkeeper Madison White.
Tech shot a season-high 24 shots and 12 on goal, with four shots on goal each from Schultz and Williams.
