The Texas Tech volleyball team came up short in their two-game series against Kansas on Friday and Saturday.
Both games were hard-fought five set games that saw the Jayhawks pull away at the end. The Red Raiders dropped to 10-5 while the Jayhawks improved to 10-3 after the two-game stretch.
Game One Goes Back-and-Forth
In the first of the two-game series the Red Raiders and Jayhawks traded blows. Texas Tech took the first and third sets while Kansas took sets two, four, and five.
Head coach Tony Graystone said Kansas made some adjustments that were hard to deal with.
“Kansas did a really good job on adjustments, and we were just a step slow on keeping up with those adjustments.” Graystone said, “So there’s very little to be really critical of other than they did a nice job of changing the game plan and doing some little things differently.”
Late in the fourth set Kansas seized the momentum, and took the set 25-19. That momentum carried into the fifth set where the Jayhawks won 15-7.
Texas Tech Loses Game Two After Winning First Two Sets
In game two, the Red Raiders took the first set 25-18 after outside hitter Kenna Sauer blocked an attempted Jayhawk spike. The Red Raiders then dominated the second set winning 25-14.
The third set went back-and-forth, however the Jayhawks ultimately avoided a potential sweep taking set three 25-22. Kansas carried that momentum into the fourth set where they won 25-15.
In the fifth set, the Red Raiders held an 8-7 lead before the Jayhawks rallied and won the set 15-9.
Coach Graystone said the team must do a better job at responding when the momentum shifts.
“We know we’re a good team,” Graystone said, “ We’ve got to find some things at the end when it’s time to finish, and we’ve got to keep our composure a little better.”
Next for the Red Raiders
The Red Raiders will travel to Waco next weekend to take on in-state rival Baylor in a two-game series. Texas Tech will look to bounce back in their second Big 12 matchup of the season.
