Where to begin with Texas Tech softball’s performance on Sunday?
Maybe the no-hitter that Missy Zoch threw in a victory over Tarleton State. After all, it was Zoch’s second no-hitter of her career and first as a Red Raider.
Maybe it was the 23 runs the Red Raiders scored in game one of the double-header against the Texans that can even be narrowed down to a 13-run third inning.
Maybe it was the record-setting three grand slams in the contests. Including a program-record two by Karli Hamilton and an NCAA-tying-record two in a single inning (Hamilton and Peyton Blythe).
Or maybe it is Tech’s record on the day, 2-0, after previously losing to the Texans in an extra-inning affair on Saturday night.
The historic game for the Red Raiders came in the form of their fifth contest, out of six on the weekend, in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. Tech would win the game in shutout fashion, 23-0.
Zoch allowed four baserunners to reach base in the contest, three via a walk and the other a hit by pitch, as she pitched Tech’s first no-hitter in over a year.
All nine starters recorded a hit with Hamilton, Kelcy Leach, and Yvonne Whaley each accumulating three base knocks. Hamilton finished with a program-high nine RBIs, thanks largely to the two grand slams.
After losing the first game between the two squads in a back-and-forth affair Saturday night, which featured Tarleton State scoring three runs in the top of the eight to put away an 11-8 victory, the rubber match was set for the second game of the doubleheader Sunday.
With the Red Raiders holding a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, Tech got the insurance run they needed.
With the bases loaded, Blythe walked in a run followed by a two-RBI single by Peyton Jackson. Whaley would cap it off with a two-run double to put Tech up 7-1.
Kennedy Crites added two more in the sixth with a two-out double to walk-off the game in run-rule fashion.
With the win, Tech earned two series victories on the weekend after taking two of three from UTEP on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
The Red Raiders improved to 16-10 on the season heading into Big 12 play. Twenty-sixth-ranked Baylor comes into town on Friday to start a three-game series.
