Texas Tech used late comebacks in both game-clinching sets to sweep a two-match series against Oklahoma.
Facing a 24-20 deficit in set four Thursday, Texas Tech strung together their biggest run of the game to take the set, 27-25, and the match, 3-1. The 7-1 run was aided in part by two kills each from senior Samantha Sanders and sophomore Caitlin Dugan. The duo finished the game with the two highest kill totals on the team, Dugan with 16 and Sanders with 23, including the final two of the match. The total from Sanders is one short of her season high, 24 against TCU.
The night started off strong for the Red Raiders who took set one, 25-19. Tech never trailed in the set.
The momentum would not translate to a strong start in set two. The Sooners took six of the first seven points with the help of two of the 22 Texas Tech attacking errors that occurred in the match.
After the Red Raiders would go on a 16-8 run to take a 17-14 lead, the set became a back and forth battle with the Sooners ultimately winning it, 27-25. Tech faced four set points in the set after taking a 24-21 lead, but the Red Raiders were unable to close out and take the 2-0 set lead.
Guewe Diouf would get the final kill of the set to close it out for Oklahoma. The freshman finished the game with a team-high 23 kills.
With the match now tied at one set a piece, the two teams once again found themselves in a back-and-forth affair, but five untimely Oklahoma attacking errors allowed the Red Raiders to pull away late, 25-21, giving them the momentum they would need to take fourth and final set to win the match, 3-1.
Get the Brooms Out
Looking for their first sweep of the year, Tech made a statement early on Friday, winning set one by 13 points, 25-12, which is tied for their largest set win on the season. Set one was the worst offensively for the Sooners on the weekend as the team would award Tech with eight points from attacking errors. Only two Sooners would record a kill in the set.
For a second straight set, Oklahoma was unable to take a lead as Tech took set two, 25-20. Dugan led the Red Raiders in the set by recording six kills and a block that gave Tech their 25th point of the set.
With their backs against the walls, Oklahoma would once again go to Diouf to provide a spark. The France-native recorded nine of her 16 kills on the night in the third in final set, but it was not enough to stifle a late Texas Tech surge.
Down 22-19, Tech would string together one final run on the weekend, 6-1, to take the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0. Sanders and Brooke Kanas recorded kills in the set. The two led the team on the night with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
On the weekend, senior libero Emerson Solano reached the 1,300 digs milestone mark, which is good for fifth in school history. Solano had 15 kills in each game.
