Last night, the MLB announced their Rookies of the Year for the American and National conferences.
Houston’s Yordan Alvarez won by a unanimous decision for the American League over Tampa Bay’s Brandon Lowe and Baltimore’s John Means. Alvarez had his major league debut on June 9th and instantly became the DH for the Astros. Through 87 games, the 22-year-old hit 27 home runs with a .655 slugging average.
For the National League, New York Mets’ Pete Alonso got 29 out 0f 30 first-place votes over Atlanta’s Mike Soroka and San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Just like Alvarez, Alonso is quite the young slugger as well with hitting 53 home runs as well as one of the best offensive first baseman this season. The 24-year-old had a .313 batting average for the season and will look to help the Mets out of their losing slum as a franchise.
The manager of the year will be announced tonight, with the AL finalist being Rocco Baldelli from Minnesota, Aaron Boone from the Yankees, and Kevin Cash from Tampa Bay. For the NL, finalists include Craig Counsell from Milwaukee, Mike Shidt from St. Louis, and Brian Snitker from Atlanta.
