Jorge Masvidal Wants Canelo; Nate Diaz Retires

The UFC “BMF” titleholder, Jorge Masvidal wants to crossover to face-off against the 4-weight world boxing champion, Canelo Alvarez. The two are both coming off victories on the same night this past Saturday and now after wondering what would be next for Masvidal, it seems like he has his sights set on the Mexican champion.

“Is Canelo a better boxer than me? Has he thrown 10,000 jabs more than me, cause that’s what he does morning and night cause he’s just boxing? Yeah. He’s a better boxer,” Masvidal said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “But can I bring some elements that boxers ain’t used to that are in the legal realm of boxing and throw Canelo completely off his game? F— yes!”

During the fight against Masvidal and Diaz at UFC 244, UFC commentator Jon Anik stated that many believe Masvidal has the best boxing in the welterweight division including former UFC Welterweight Champion, Tyron Woodley. Masvidal would also state that the Mayweather-McGregor boxing match showed him that MMA movements could favor him and give him sort of an advantage in a boxing match.

“In the wake of Conor and Mayweather, it showed me a lot of things that I thought were good and bad,” Masvidal said. “I saw they can’t read us as well as they can read a boxer. Our movements are different. How we cover the distance is different. Those things give them problems.”

“I’m a natural bigger dude. … With boxing gloves on I’m not afraid of breaking my hand because I have that cast [of tape] on, it will be a little bit extra harder. I feel I can be a legitimate … threat in there. Plus I’m a little longer than him, too.”

Masvidal is 5’11 with a 74-inch reach while Canelo is 5’9 with a 70.5-inch reach. Masvidal would definitely have the advantage in measurements. In their last fights, Masvidal weighed in at 169lbs and Canelo weighed in at 174, both winning by TKO.

“I think I can throw enough punches that I can attack Canelo and put him on his a–. I’d be going for the knockout, obviously. Nothing else. This is not to disrespect Canelo, because I think the dude is a beast. I think he’s a stud. It would be an honor to get in the ring with him. But he did say some s— like no MMA fighter would be a challenge and this and that. I beg to differ.”

Masvidal has stated that he is looking for the biggest fight with the biggest payday and after seeing what Mayweather and McGregor got in their match, Masvidal and Canelo would definitely be interested.

In rather familiar but shocking news, Nate Diaz has again announced his retirement via his social media platforms. Diaz is coming off his defeat from Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244 and after losing the fight Diaz stated he wanted to run it “right back” but that rematch has been put aside due to his announcement in the early morning of November 7th.

Now, we shall see what happens next with the Stockton native and hopefully we can see him back sooner rather than later.

Jorge Masvidal would go on to post this on his Instagram:
