Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen will not seek re-election next year following the release of a secretly recorded conversation with an activist.
Bonnen said this morning he’s had numerous conversations with House members over the past few days and decided it’s in the best interest of the House to move on.
The Angleton Republican also thanked a litany of colleagues for the respect and thoughtfulness they showed over the issue.
Bonnen was heavily criticized after Empower Texans founder Michael Quinn Sullivan released the recording which included negative comments about fellow House members.
Sullivan also suggested Bonnen gave him a list of ten House Republicans his group could target in exchange for House floor credentials for his news group.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the meeting.
