After three months of holding out, Pro Bowler running back Melvin Gordon has decided to rejoin the Chargers.
Gordon will return to practice and play for the rest of his season still on his rookie contract but become a free agent in 2020. In his absence, the Chargers’ run game surprisingly hasn’t been too bad. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson have averaged 5.2 yards per carry, which is fifth in the NFL. So, will a player that hasn’t been with the team for three months be given his starting spot back?
“No doubt, no doubt. He’s our starter. He was our starter for a reason,” coach Anthony Lynn said about Gordon’s usage. “We’ll use him just like we used him before. No different. The things he did was he scored touchdowns. I believe playmakers put the ball in the end zone, somehow, some way. He’s always been able to do that.”
The four-year vet will indeed get his starting role back. Gordon has 28 touchdowns in 55 games while averaging four yards per carry. Last season, he had 1.990 rushing yards on 459 carries with 18 touchdowns.
On whether or not Gordon will play this Sunday against the Dolphins, coach Lynn said “We’ll see what type of shape he’s in. Just his conditioning, just his agility, you know to see where he’s at.”
