The Kansas Jayhawk men’s’ basketball team will receive a notice of allegations for multiple major violations.
This summer, an NCAA official had said to The Star that after some speculation, they were to release information about the school’s involvement of the pay-for-play recruiting scheme from the FBI.
The Jayhawk’s center Silvio de Sousa was suspended for two years but was later reduced to only one year due to the found violations. Adidas consultant T.J. Gassnola testified during the FBI’s investigation that De Sousa’s guardian had received payments. Head coach Bill Self testified that he was not aware of these payments.
When reviewing text messages, Gassnola had actually been in contact with Self. So the NCAA ruled in February to suspend De Sousa for the next two years which was later adjusted.
These Level 1 violations have punishments that include postseason bans as well as scholarship losses.
Kansas was one of several schools also being investigated by the FBI for pay-for-play violations. Arizona, Auburn, Creighton, Louisville, LSU, and USC were other teams being investigate.
