Former key piece of Texas Tech’s road to the NCAA National Championship, Matt Mooney, has signed with the Memphis Grizzlies this morning.
During the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Mooney played five games with the Atlanta Hawks. In his short time there, he tallied 46 points, 8 three-pointers made and 14 assists and rebounds.
In Memphis, Mooney has the opportunity to play alongside a very young roster, especially with the second-overall pick in the NBA Draft, Ja Morant out of Murray State. Other young stars include Dillon Brooks, Kyle Anderson, and Jaren Jackson Jr. who are all projected starters to play with the veteran center, Jonas Valanciunas.
With only signing a 10-day contract, Mooney will have to work hard at practice to make the 15-man NBA roster with the Grizzlies. But with the contract, there are many incentives for him to play for an NBA team’s G-League affiliate.
