In addition to the retirement of Lubbock Police Chief Greg Stevens, the City of Lubbock on Tuesday announced the retirement of Fire Chief Lance Phelps.
Stevens, under municipal retirement rules, can take a job after retirement, and he was named as the sole finalist as police chief in Rockport.
Mayor Dan Pope and City Manager Jarrett Atkinson will hold a news conference late Tuesday afternoon to talk about the two new developments.

We have two important announcements to make this afternoon. First, Fire Chief Lance Phelps will retire effective April 26, 2019. Chief Phelps has been a member of Lubbock Fire Rescue (LFR) for 32 years and has served as Fire Chief since October 2015. Under Lance’s guidance, LFR achieved the coveted ISO 1 fire protection rating, a rating enjoyed by fewer than 300 cities across the nation. A new, multi-agency Emergency Operations Center was also completed under his watch that has proven itself several times over during the last year. Lance has served our City in an admirable and faithful manner, and we are all safer for his dedication and efforts.
Second, Police Chief Greg Stevens announced his retirement today, effective on May 31, 2019. Chief Stevens began his career with the Lubbock Police Department (LPD) 27 years ago and has served as Police Chief since August, 2015. Under his guidance, LPD has continued to expand the force, move to the Community Policing Model and participate in the Community Engagement Task Force. LPD is currently in the process of constructing a new Headquarters and three substations, which support Community Policing. Greg is a tremendous Chief and public servant and I appreciate his service to our community.

We are currently in the process of selecting the next Lubbock Fire Rescue Chief and will have an announcement in the next few weeks. A search for the next Lubbock Police Department Chief will begin next week and an Interim Chief, if required, will be announced prior to May 31, 2019.
