The college basketball season is under-way and there are plenty of talented players all over the Big 12 conference, but who are the new faces that transferred in from different conferences expected to make impacts for their respective teams?
Baylor
Makai Mason a transfer from Yale comes to find. The Ivy League preseason player of the year missed all of the 17-18 season due to a left foot injury. Mason in the 15-16 season averaged 16 PPG, 3.8 APG, while shooting 35.7 percent from 3. In that same year, he was 6th in Win Shares, 3rd in Points Produced, and 8th in Effective Field Goal Percentage. Baylor had a down year last year, but expect Mason to be a key catalyst to Baylor’s success this season and help lead this young team.
Iowa State
Marial Shayok is expected to come in a help lead this young Cyclone team back to the NCAA tournament. Shayok transferred from Virginia after the 16-17 season and brings a defensive mindset to Ames. In his last season at Virginia he was 3rd in the ACC in Defensive Rating at 92.2 and 8th in Steal Percentage at 2.8. He is very defensive minded, but he can also contribute offensively, over his career at UVA he was a 38 percent 3-point shooter and averaged 8.9 PPG in his last year.
Kansas
Dedric/KJ Lawson are two of the best players in the country and are a big reason why the Kansas Jayhawks are ranked as the preseason number 1 ranked team. The Lawson brothers bring versatility on both ends of the floor meaning they both can play 4 out of the 5 positions on the court and will cause mismatch nightmares all season long. In the 16-17 season KJ averaged 12 PPG, 2.8 APG, 8.1 RPG and Dedric put up 19.2 PPG, 3.3 APG, 10 RPG last year at Memphis. Dedric could have turned pro and would most likely been a lottery or at least a first-round pick in either of his first 2 years in college, but he decided to stay in school to work on his game. His last year in the American Athletic Conference he finished in the top 10 in almost every advanced analytic there is. Expect these two to make an immediate impact in Lawrence as they help send Jayhawk nation to consecutive Final Fours for the first time since the 2002-2003 season.
Texas Tech
Matt Mooney/Tariq Owens are two of the most intriguing transfers in the country as they both have played at 3 different schools and bring unique skillsets to the revamped Red Raider program. Mooney most previous stint was at South Dakota where he averaged 18.7 PPG, 3.1 APG, 4.1 RPG, while shooting 35.2 percent from 3. Mooney brings a non-traditional Point Guard style of play to a Red Raider team that has very little turnover at that position from the previous year. Owens another Grad Transfer that previously played at St. Johns where he averaged 8.4 PPG, 2.8 BPG and 5.9 RPG. The 6’11 defensive stud is one of the best shot blockers in the country and has led the Big East in blocks for the past 2 seasons and will likely do the same in the Big 12. He also was 4th in Defensive Rating at 99.8 and 1st in Defensive Box Plus/Minus at 7.0.
