Houston, TX — Mayor Sylvester Turner plans to hire a law firm to represent the city in its effort to push back against Proposition B.
Voters approved the measure in the November 6 election, requiring the city to pay firefighters the same as police officers of the same rank.
Turner says Prop B violates state law and will cost the city about 100-million-dollars over the next year. City Council on Wednesday approved 500-thousand-dollars to hire the law firm, half the amount the mayor and city legal department wanted.
Prop B takes effect in January.
