(Austin, TX) — A state education board workgroup is backing off its earlier recommendation that the Alamo defenders not be described as “heroic” in seventh-grade social studies curriculum.
The workgroup had also recommended the removal of a reference to a letter Colonel William Travis wrote just before the siege.
The board caught an earful from the public at its September meeting on Tuesday.
Governor Greg Abbott and other elected officials also criticized the recommendations.
The state board makes its final decisions in November.
