(Austin, TX) — As the November elections approach, state Democrats are wondering how they lost a “safe” Senate seat in west Texas.
Republican Pete Flores defeated Democrat Pete Gallego in Senate District 19 on Tuesday night.
State Senator Carlos Uresti had vacated the seat after his eleven felony convictions earlier this year.
Uresti had repeatedly been re-elected by double digits in the district, which Hillary Clinton carried by 12 in 2016.
Flores is the first Hispanic Republican in the Texas Senate, where the GOP majority will now be 21 to 10.
