(Austin, TX) — The city of Austin is not expected to get a new name.
Austin Equity Office Chief Brion Oaks says people misunderstand the meaning of a memo from his office to City Council members.
He says the Austin name was part of an overall look at historical figures with ties to racism, segregation, or slavery.
Austin is named after Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of Texas.”
City Council had asked Oaks’s office to look at city-owned Confederate monuments and memorials on city property, including streets and buildings.
