The shooter, described as a Hispanic man, shot Dr. Mark Hausknecht on Main Street near the Texas Medical Center.
The 65-year-old doctor worked at the DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and had treated former President George H.W. Bush.
Hausknecht was pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital.
Investigators are looking at surveillance video in hopes of finding the suspect.
