LUBBOCK – Texas Tech Student Government Association Senate had their ninth meeting of the 53rd session and first official meeting of the semester Thursday.

Internal Vice-President Alissa Payne presided over the meeting. One item on the agenda was presenting the new Recognizing Raiders awards.

Tech SGA awarded their Small Organization of the Year award to the Masked Bakers, a group that bakes food for underprivileged people in Lubbock. Large Organization of the Year was awarded to the Black Student Association.

Freshman Public Relations major Mikayla Sanders took over the job of Journal Clerk for the SGA, replacing the interim clerk put in place after her predecessor stepped down. Sanders had been working as an intern for the former journal clerk during her time in the Freshman Leadership Association.

Sanders said she was very excited about the position, and said she looks forward to gaining more experience in her new role.

“I’m filling really big shoes,” she said.

Her job entails typing up the end-of-year journal for the SGA, preparing documents, printing them and uploading them to OrgSync, and managing the Tech student organization webpage service, as necessary.

No new business was brought before the Senate from any committees, with members speaking of their reflection on the job before them during their smaller committee meetings.

The infrastructure committee brought no new business before the Senate, and no old business in their committee report. Parking on campus was also not mentioned, by this committee, during the meeting or in the report.

Jarrett Hatcher, representing Visual and Performing Arts, moved to leave Senate Resolution 53.90, dealing with using the band lot for parking during the Spring semester, at its current status pending a meeting with Parking services.

Kate Holder, representing Arts and Sciences, spoke on replacing old physics lab equipment as part of Senate Resolution 53.88, and said bids for equipment were still being acquired.

Senate Resolution 53.91 dealt with adding a dog park to the Tech campus.

“Alright guys, I’m not gonna lie, I’ve slept since then, and honestly, it’s blanking me why we put this on second reading,” John Michael Lanham, representing Engineering, said of Senate Resolution 53.91. “Does anyone want to jog my memory, real quick?”

The text of SR 53.91 mentions overwhelming support for the dog park and a continuance of Tech’s initiative to improve overall student life.

Several minutes were spent by other senators reminding the SGA senator of the status of the resolution he authored. After intervention by other senators, the resolution ultimately passed.
