(Undated) — A senior manager at Volkswagen is on his way to prison. Oliver Schmidt was sentenced today to seven years behind bars for his role in a scheme to allow vehicles to circumvent pollution limits. Schmidt worked in Volkswagen’s engineering and environmental office in Michigan. In meetings with California regulators, he never disclosed rogue, sophisticated software that allowed nearly 600-thousand diesel vehicles to evade pollution limits. Schmidt’s lawyers said others at V-W hatched the scheme. But a judge today called him a key conspirator who viewed the cover-up as a way to climb the corporate ladder.
