(Washington, DC) — The Supreme Court looks divided in the case of a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple.
The court heard nearly 90 minutes of oral arguments this morning, in a case that pits freedom of religion and expression against marriage equality and freedom from discrimination. The deciding vote will likely come down to Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is both an ardent supporter of free speech and the author of the Court’s major gay rights decisions.
A recent Gallup poll showed that nearly two-thirds of Americans support the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision legalizing same-sex marriage.
Some civil rights groups fear a decision in favor of the baker could open the door for other public businesses to deny services to the LGBT community.
