(Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) — For the first time in decades, Saudi Arabia will allow movie theaters to open.
It’s the latest social change by the country’s young Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. Movie theaters were shut down in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s during a wave of ultraconservatism.
Many of Saudi Arabia’s clerics view western movies and even Arabic films made in Egypt and Lebanon as sinful.
The crown prince has sought to push through a number of major social reforms such as lifting a ban on women driving and bringing back concerts and other forms of entertainment.
