(Houston, TX) — In the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey, significant changes in Harris County’s regulation of new development will take effect on January 1st.
The Harris County Commissioners Court unanimously passed the new regulations on Tuesday. For the first time in 20 years, there will be an increase in how much new homes will have to be elevated to avoid floodwaters. The increase will be up to eight feet higher than was previously required in some flood-prone areas.
The new regulations will affect a 500-year floodplain instead of a 100-year floodplain.
