(New York, NY) — A 500-year-old Leonardo da Vinci painting is fetching a fortune on the auction block. A work called “Salvator Mundi” sold for 450-million dollars with fees tonight at Christie’s in New York City. An art collector bought what he thought was a copy of the long lost painting more than a decade ago for ten-thousand dollars. After being restored, it was determined to be one of only 15 known paintings by the artist. It was expected to go for at least 100-million dollars, but far exceeded that amount as bids came in from around the world. The final price shattered the old record for a work of art being sold at auction, passing Picasso’s “Women of Algiers” which went for 179-million dollars in 2015. The new owner is keeping his identity private.
