(San Antonio, TX) — A “junk food” tax is on the table in San Antonio.
The tax is one of the proposals included in the 2017 “Health Bexar [[ bear ]] Plan,” which is intended to help create a healthier community. Dr. Robert Ferrer of the UT Health Science Center says the tax is designed to discourage consumption of unhealthy food. He says obesity and diabetes are major public health problems resulting in part from too much junk food.
It’ll be up to City Council to define “junk food” for purposes of imposing the tax.
