Danica Roem To Be First Transgender Individual To Serve In A State Legislature

(Manassas, VA)  —  Democrat Danica Roem is the first transgender individual to be elected to a state legislature, after defeating a 13-term member of Virginia’s House of Delegates last night.

Roem ousted Republican incumbent Robert Marshall, in a race that focused on local issues, but shone a light on the nation’s division over issues surrounding gender identity.

Her opponent was the author of “bathroom bill,” who refused to debate Roem because of her trans identity, and often referred to himself as Virginia’s “homophobe-in-chief.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden called Roem to congratulate her on her victory last night.

Roem says her time in office will focus on issues related to infrastructure and equal rights. She refused to put down Marshall, saying, come January, he will become one of her constituents.
