(Washington, DC) — A federal court judge in Washington, DC is blocking portions of the White House ban on transgender people serving in the U.S. military.
Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly issued an injunction today in a lawsuit brought by several transgender service members to halt implementation of President Trump’s ban. In August, Trump signed an executive order barring transgender people from serving and preventing their recruitment.
It also allowed the military to discharge current transgender service members by March of 2018. In the ruling, Kollar-Kotelly wrote that the transgender service members were like to win their lawsuit and barred the administration from reversing course.
Kollar-Kotelly left intact a portion of the policy that bars the use of government funds for sex reassignment surgeries.
