(San Benito, TX) — A former employee with the Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department is facing theft charges in a case involving fajitas.
Gilberto Escaramilla was fired in August after it was discovered he had arranged delivery of 800 pounds of fajitas from a county food vendor for a department that does not have the item on its menu.
When confronted by superiors, Escaramilla confessed he used county funds to pay for the fajitas and deliver them to other customers.
Investigators arrested Escaramilla last week after records revealed he had stolen over one-point-two million dollars’ worth of fajitas over the last nine years.
US news reported that “Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz tells The Brownsville Herald that Gilberto Escaramilla was fired in August and arrested after authorities obtained a search warrant and found packages of the Tex-Mex food in his refrigerator. Investigators subsequently checked vendor invoices and determined he would intercept county-funded food deliveries and deliver them to his own customers.”
