Archduke von Habsburg to Speak at Texas Tech

(LUBBOCK) – His Imperial and Royal Highness Archduke Georg von Habsburg-Lothringen, a prominent global figure with expertise in politics and business, will deliver a public lecture at Texas Tech University.

The Office of International Affairs welcomes His Imperial and Royal Highness Archduke Georg von Habsburg-Lothringen of Austria and Hungary to Texas Tech University.

Habsburg-Lothringen will spend Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 16 and 17) meeting with several student and faculty groups and will deliver a lecture, “The European Union’s Greatest Challenges to Survive Brexit,” at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the International Cultural Center Auditorium, 601 Indiana Ave.

The presentation will be introduced by Peter I. Barta, a professor of Russian Language within the Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures. The event is free and open to the public and a brief reception will follow.

Habsburg-Lothringen is a prominent global figure with expertise in European politics and business. He serves as ambassador-at-large in the office of the President of Hungary, and from 2006-2012 served as president of the Hungarian Red Cross. He is the grandson of Emperor and King Karl, the last monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his late father, Otto von Habsburg, was the last Crown Prince of the Austrian Empire and one of the founders of the European Union.

“His Imperial and Royal Highness is visiting Texas Tech at a most opportune time, given the current state of affairs in Europe,” said Ambassador Tibor Nagy, Texas Tech vice provost for International Affairs. “While his public lecture will focus on the aftershocks of Britain deciding to leave the European Union, other events on the European continent also are creating global tremors.

“Will Catalonia ‘divorce’ from Spain? How will the European Union deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggressive posture? How will German Prime Minister Angela Merkel be able to form a new coalition government? These are just a few of the major open questions. Given His Imperial and Royal Highness Habsburg’s background, expertise and long experience with European politics, he is the ideal expert to bring clarity to Europe’s current shifting dynamics.”

During his time at Texas Tech, Habsburg-Lothringen will deliver classroom presentations to students in political science (“How Europe’s Goals for Transnationalism are Impacted by the Current Environment”), Air Force ROTC (“How Current Geopolitical Environment Impacts Europe’s Security”) and global journalism (“How Russia’s Disinformation Campaign Impacts Europeans’ Attitudes and Morale”).

He also will complete an interview with Texas Tech Public Media’s “Inside Texas Tech” and deliver a presentation to students, faculty and staff within the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The lecture and visit are sponsored by The CH Foundation, the College of Media & Communication, the Honors College, the Institute for the Study of Western Civilizations, the TTUHSC Internal Medicine Residency Program, the Center for Global Understanding and the Office of International Affairs.
