The Texas Senate’s State Affairs Committee is advancing controversial legislation designed to crack down on so-called “sanctuary cities” in Texas.
The panel voted early today to punish local governments and college campuses that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials. At a public hearing yesterday in Austin, hundreds sounded off on Senate Bill 4, and nearly all were opposed to the measure they say would endanger public safety by hurting police relations with immigrant communities.
The bill’s sponsor, State Senator Charles Perry, says his legislation is about the “rule of law” and that local governments and Texas universities must cooperate with federal officials on illegal immigration.
