(Washington, DC) — GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan is praising President-elect Donald Trump’s pick of retired General James Mattis as defense secretary.
In a statement, Ryan called Mattis the right choice to lead the Pentagon after, quote — “eight years of fecklessness under President Obama.”
Ryan said Trump is serious about rebuilding the military, defeating ISIS and keeping Americans safe.
The 66-year old Mattis retired as chief of U.S. Central Command in 2013 after serving more than four decades in the Marines.
For Mattis to serve, Congress would have to waive a federal law stating that a defense chief cannot have been on active military duty for seven years prior to Senate confirmation.
