(Washington, DC) — Senator John McCain says President-elect Donald Trump did the right thing in taking a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan’s president.
An editorial in a Chinese state-run newspaper today blasts Trump for ignoring the One China policy.
But McCain tells Fox News Trump “did exactly the right thing.”
He contends “somebody’s got to stand up to China,” saying, “that’s something this administration has not done.”
Since 1979, the U.S. has accepted China’s position that Taiwan is part of “One China.”
Trump’s phone call with Taiwan’s president was the first such contact involving a U.S. president or president-elect in decades.
