(McAllen, Texas) — Texas is reporting its first home-grown case of Zika, making it only the second state where mosquitoes are known to be spreading the virus.
Florida has also reported locally transmitted cases.
A Texas Health Services Department statement said yesterday that a lab test confirmed last week that a woman in Cameron County, along the U.S.-Mexico border, was infected.
She was not pregnant and hasn’t recently traveled to Mexico or anywhere else where there are Zika outbreaks.
The Texas State Health Commissioner says it was only a matter of time before a Zika case spread by a mosquito turned up in the Lone Star State.
