(Washington, DC) — A men’s health organization is urging men to grow their mustaches this month to raise awareness for illnesses that can lead to a premature death.
Shannetta McDonald with the Movember Foundation says the mustache is the “ribbon” for men’s health.
She says it’s the only global charity solely focused on men’s health.
It wants to raise funding for projects focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
The Movember Foundation says men die six years earlier than women on average, and 12-percent of men above the age of 17 are in fair or poor health.
The Foundation is looking to cut premature deaths of men by 25-percent by 2030.
It also wants to reduce suicides by 25 percent and deaths from prostate and testicular cancer by 50-percent.
