(New York, NY) — New York City’s Health Commissioner is urging the FDA to change its blood donor deferral policy for men who have sex with men.
Current policy bars gay men from giving blood if they’ve had sex with other men in the last 12 months.
Dr. Mary Bassett says FDA rules should be replaced with a three-step screening process that doesn’t exclude donors based on sexual orientation or gender.
She says that would boost America’s blood supply by two- to four-percent, potentially saving the lives of nearly two-million people.
